What is Coolmax?

Coolmax, a registered trademark of Invista, is the brand name for a range of moisture-wicking technical fabrics developed by DuPont Textiles and Interiors (now Invista) in 1986. These fabrics use specially developed polyester fibres that provide superior moisture wicking compared to natural fibres such as cotton. “Wick away” is a general term for fabrics designed to wick moisture away from the skin over a larger area by capillary action and increase evaporation.

Coolmax Structure:

Coolmax fibres are not round, but are a slightly oblong in cross-section with grooves along the length of the yarns. They are produced in tetrachannel or hexachannel design. A series of closely spaced channels creates a capillary action that draws moisture through the core and releases it to a larger area of the fabric surface, increasing evaporation.

Coolmax Uses:

Coolmax fabric was initially developed for garment to be worn during extreme physical activity – sweat can evaporate rapidly and the wearer stays dry. Other beneficial properties include resistance to fading, shrinkage and creasing. Today, the fibres are often woven with other materials such as cotton, wool, spandex and tencel. As a result, Coolmax is used in a wide range of garments, from mountaineering gear to everyday sportswear and underwear. Coolmax mattress covers and bed sheets are also suitable for people who suffer from hot flashes or night sweats due to illness, medication or menopause.
