How to calculate the weight of fabric?

Why is fabric weight important?

1,The weight of the fabric and its application have a significant relationship

If you have experience purchasing fabrics from fabric suppliers, then you know that they will ask you for your preferred fabric weight. It is also an important reference specification to help you find the best fabric materials for your application.

2,Fabric weight will affect the total quantity you need to order

If you purchase fabric by kilograms, the higher weight per unit, the shorter total length you get when the weight you purchase is fixed. If you purchase fabric by the length, increasing the weight of fabric per unit, then the total weight of the fabric increases, so shipping costs may also increase. This can affect your budget.

What are the most common units of measurement?

1, Gsm (g/m²)

Gram per square meter is the weight of fabric per unit area. This unit of measurement can also be written as g/m². GSM is the most common unit of measurement worldwide.

2,Gram per yard (g/y)

Gram per yard (one yard is around 0.91 meter) is the weight of fabric per unit length. This unit of measurement is often written as g/y. G/Y is more commonly used in factories.

3, Oz per square yard (oz/yd²)

Ounce per square yard (one ounce is around 28.3 grams, one yard is around 0.91 meter) is the weight of fabric per unit area. This unit of measurement is often written as oz/yd². Oz/yd² is more commonly used in the UK.

How to check the weight of fabric?

1, Using circle cutter and precision digital scale

The circle cutter is a tool widely used in the textile industry to check the weight of fabric. This is the most accurate way as your fabric sample will be large enough to form a circle. The cut area of the fabric from the circle cutter is 0.01 m², so we calculate the weight of the fabric by the formula when it is weighed in grams:

(weight of fabric piece in grams) x 100 = gsm

2, Using simple tools found around the office

If your fabric sample is less than 10x10cm or if you don’t have a circle cutter, you can use the usual tools on your desk to check the weight of the fabric: pen and ruler! However, it is always better to have a precision digital scale for greater accuracy.

First, using pen and ruler, draw a rectangle on the fabric. Second, cut the rectangle out of the fabric you painted on. Then measure the width and length of the rectangle in cm and calculate the area in (cm²) = (width) x (length). Third, weigh the rectangular sample in grams. Finally calculate the weight of the fabric using the formula:

10,000 ÷ (the area of the rectangle(cm²)) x (the weight of the fabric swatch(g)) = (fabric weight (g/m²))

No digital precision scale? Too complicated? Don’t worry! We can analyze the fabric for you! Huasheng provides free fabric analysis services including fabric composition, fabric weight, and knitting structure. Please feel free to send us the sample.
